The city of Detroit and its surrounding suburbs have come a long way, with many aspects of city life improving for residents steadily. However, the public transportation system in Metropolitan Detroit remains inadequate for many. A significant number of Detroiters struggle to maintain employment without access to a vehicle.
Nearly 8,600 Detroiters walked to work in 2020 (a 30% increase since 2014). Studies show that a major barrier to employment is lack of transportation. In fact, lack of a vehicle worsens Detroit’s unemployment rate.
This problem inspired the creation of "Wheels For Work: Birthday Blessing", when Richard Sr., Kevin and Richard Jr. came together with a vision to celebrate their milestone birthdays in September.
Partnering with them is the esteemed Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries (DRMM), an organization with over a century-long legacy of supporting Detroiters through various initiatives such as housing, meals, job training, and much more. DRMM will act as the fiduciary for all donations, making donations tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. DRMM will also help select the deserving recipients of the vehicles.
You may recall the heartwarming story of a formerly homeless department store security guard who walked ten miles each day to work. DRMM's generous donation of a Dodge Neon changed his life.
These birthday boys want to replicate this effort for as many Detroit families as possible. Will you help?
